Sermon Sneak Peak for January 24th
Dear Family and Friends of First Pres,
Former President, George Bush, noted how the outside of the U.S. Capital is the front porch for democracy. What a privilege it is to live in a nation where regardless of who wins, we demonstrate to the world what it means to have a peaceful transition of leadership. That is what happened in our country today; this Sunday, it will happen in our church!
Many fail to realize our U.S. system of government is fashioned and patterned after the Presbyterian form of government. In other words, your church leaders are selected by you, the members of the congregation, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, to participate in church leadership as Elders or Deacons. Collectively known as the Session, your Ruling Elders and Teaching Elders (your pastors) share the leadership responsibilities of the church. Pastors and Ruling Elders have a parity in how our vote “counts”, i.e. a pastor’s vote is the same as a Ruling Elder’s. This is what makes us Presbyterian in that we are a church governed by Elders from among the people of the church!
This Sunday, in a first for our congregation, we will ordain and/or install our newest class of Ruling Elders and Deacons on Livestream with a Zoom feed for them to answer the constitutional questions! Our Gospel lection comes from Mark 1:14-20, and appropriately, deals with Jesus calling the first disciples!
Friends, we miss seeing you in person but feel you in our hearts through the Spirit! Remember to reach out to at least ten different people this week through calls, texts, Facetimes or letter expressing how you are thinking about them and lift them before the Lord in prayer! I am
Your pastor and friend,
