Dear Friends and Family of First Pres Fort Lauderdale,
This week we will be looking at a parable in Matthew’s Gospel. Chapter 13 has several brief parables describing the character and nature of the Kingdom of Heaven, and this week, we will look at just one: The Parable of the Mustard Seed from Matthew 13:31-32. Jesus loved to use parables when he taught crowds of people. He could have spoken plainly about what he wanted them to know, but Jesus was a good teacher; Jesus knew that for a student to remember something, they have to wrestle with a fact and then appropriate it into their own life. Through one’s effort in figuring out a parable, a Christ-Follower grows in her or his faith to a deeper spiritual level of understanding.
Sunday we will be looking at the Mustard Seed, and unpacking what it means about the whimsical nature of the Kingdom of Heaven. You may want to read a few articles online about what parables are and how are they used. Try your hand at writing one yourself! Begin your parable like Jesus begins his in Matthew 13, “The Kingdom of Heaven is like…”. I’d love to see what you come up with so please send them to me at the church, email@example.com.
