Deacon Ministry
Do you know that there are 22 Deacons in 2020? Do you know that there are five different teams within the Deacon Ministry? What are some of the things that we do? Our Compassionate Care Team this year includes Carol Callahan, Linda Condon, Shirley Gleason, Tom Nichols and John Rubino.

  • Lilies, poinsettias, chancel, wedding, and funeral flowers are often designated for Deacon distribution to the ill, care connects, and individuals in need.
  • Soup is made and kept in the kitchen for likewise distribution.
  • Get well, sympathy, encouragement, and other cards are written and sent.

Please let Pastor Pam or one of the Deacons know of members in need, not just those who are ill or bereaved, but also those going through a challenging period in his/her life. We also welcome your helping hands and hearts. The flowers, soups, and cards just set the stage.  Connecting with others is a powerful and meaningful ministry.

This week we highlight the artistic talents of church member, elder and educator, Alicia Bresee. In her own words, “During this stay at home time, I have returned to painting miniatures. They range in size from 2 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ to 3 1/2″x 5 1/2″ and can be done inside using limited space. I find inspiration from the vast collection of photographs I have taken to preserve notable subjects for future paintings. Over the years these little pieces have become gift cards, memoirs of homes, and table adornments to be displayed on an easel.” Thank you, Alicia, for sharing your talents and providing us a little escape from our current locations! Connect with Mona Petersen to find out how to share your talents in order to lift the spirit of others! MonaP@firstpres.cc

COVID-19 Emergency Medical Mask Response Team
What an amazing week the COVID-19 Emergency Medical Mask Response Team had! Over 5,000 masks have been sewn in two weeks! This week they delivered 1,117 cut, sewn, HEPA filled, elastic tied masks to the BCMA and Holy Cross Hospital to be worn by nurses and doctors. Wow! Each of those masks represents about an hour or more of work. The quality of the masks is incredible, with few exceptions, sewers have watched the tutorial, read the instructions, and done an outstanding job of constructing a somewhat difficult mask. Thank you to the team of transporters that has been responsive, easy to work with, and flexible. They travel all over the county throughout the day…always with a smile and joyful hearts. Our goal is to deliver a minimum of 4,000 masks next week to organizations that are desperate for this type of mask. Sewers … keep on sewing!

Worship will be streamed every Sunday at 11 a.m.

Click here to view this Sunday’s service.

First Pres Blood Drive
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our partners at OneBlood have reported that more than 1900 blood drives have been canceled through May, which translates to more than 30,000 blood donations lost. The U.S. Surgeon General and the FDA have stated that it remains safe to donate blood and safe to attend blood drives. Because of the great need for blood, First Pres has decided to hold our drive as scheduled on Sunday, May 3, 2020.

Things will be different, though. We will have the Big Red Bus on campus from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and encourage you to make an appointment so that social distancing protocols can be maintained.

Click here to make an appointment.

Bathrooms will be available but you will be asked to remain in your car if you have to wait for your appointment. As usual, eat a good breakfast, drink plenty of water, and bring your ID! Thank you for being a life-saver during this critical time in history.

COVID-19 Emergency Medical Mask Response Team
The FPC Emergency Medical Mask Team led by Pam Hickson and Dr. Paul Greenman is full steam ahead. They completed 3,000+ masks by Good Friday. Close to 250 volunteers are involved in this effort. Please contact Pam Hickson for more info at HicksonPam@aol.com.

Church Wide Bible Study
True faith produces fruit. The Book of James speaks to the realities of a living faith in Jesus Christ. He writes to believers who know suffering, who’ve faced trials, and who ultimately desire a deep relationship with God. The church wide study begins on Tuesday, April 21, 2020 and will be held on Tuesday evenings at 6 p.m. The study will also be held on Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. starting Thursday, April 23, 2020. COVID-19 Emergency Medical Mask Response Team
We have begun responding to an immediate need in our city for medical masks. First Pres is working with Dr. Paul Greenman of the Broward County Medical Assessment team to provide masks for medical professionals and first responders.

In the last few days we have assembled a team of nearly 200 volunteers cutting, sewing, and transporting with a goal of 3000 masks by Friday. The procurement of materials for another round is underway. The need is going to be great and this church is ready to step up.

We are in need of capable sewers to expand the effort. If you are able to sew and have a sewing machine please contact Pam Hickson at HicksonPam@aol.com. Your efforts will save lives.

UPDATE AS OF MARCH 14, 2020

The leadership of your church family has been monitoring the events surrounding the COVID-19 virus all week. I am sure you are aware of the many suspensions of public gatherings occurring in our area. Church leadership has been monitoring the recommendations of the Federal, State, and Local governments and reports from the CDC. We have been in communication with city leaders, Broward Health as well as about a hundred other churches in order to discern how to best work together as a community to disrupt the spread of this serious disease.

In considering the most prudent ways to cooperate with our broader community, the Session of First Pres has agreed to suspend all public gatherings at the church for Sunday, March 15 as well as ministry events for the upcoming week. We will review the suspensions one week at a time for the next three weeks.

Though there are no public gatherings at the church, your staff are still here and are looking for ways to creatively engage our congregation in pastoral connectivity. We are here for you in any way you need!

Important updates for this week (3/15/20-3/21/20):

  • We will provide communication updates through text, email, the website, and Facebook
  • Onsite classes and Bible studies, including Happyland Day School classes, are suspended as we seek new ways to gather remotely for the short term
  • Rehearsals, evening programming, as well as our AAC and adult ministry outreach, will also be suspended
  • All food service operations will be suspended temporarily
  • The business of the church will continue on as usual, and team meetings will occur via phone conferencing

Sermon Sneak Peek Video:

As life around us changes, seemingly moment-by-moment we are rethinking how to reach out, minister to others and share the Gospel.  The good news is that the Good News remains the same.  Christ’s mandate to be a body that loves God and loves neighbor remains the same and our identity as a church remains the same: to be an inspiring, Christ-focused presence, transforming the community by sharing the Gospel.  It is simply that the delivery mechanisms are shifting as we are called to a practice of “social distancing” in order to care for one another.

Check out the Sermon Sneak Peek for Wednesday, May 20, 2020 below:
