This Sunday, February 26, 2017, is Transfiguration Sunday and the final Sunday before the Lenten season. We will examine Matthew’s account of Peter, James, and John accompanying Jesus up a mountain there they see Jesus enveloped in brilliant light, standing alongside Moses and Elijah. The disciples hear a voice declare “This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!”
The Transfiguration of Jesus Christ in the synoptic gospels marks a transition in Jesus’ ministry. After this event in the gospel narrative, Jesus fixes his gaze on Jerusalem and the events to come. For us, it marks the transition into a season of reflection and a renewed focus on our own spiritual disciplines.
We will begin the Lenten season together a week from today, Wednesday, March 1, 2017. I hope that you will join us for dinner in the Fellowship Hall at 5:00 p.m. and Ash Wednesday service at 6:30 p.m. in the Sanctuary. The service will conclude with the imposition of ashes.
