Fort Lauderdale, FL (January 19, 2017) – Time to strap on your bike helmets and ride for a good cause. On Saturday, February 18, 2017, First Presbyterian Church of Fort Lauderdale and Habitat for Humanity Broward County will partner to host the 5th Annual Habitat for Humanity Bike to Build Ride. At the finish line of this bike ride is a new home for a deserving family in Broward County.
“No one should ever be without a home,” said Kelley Jackson, Habitat for Humanity Mission Steering Committee member. “Since 1983, First Presbyterian Church volunteers have built homes through our partnership with Habitat for Humanity. Our committee is excited to be able to continue raising money for this important cause with the annual Bike to Build Ride. This is our fifth year strong, and we hope this event will become a long-standing tradition that benefits Habitat for Humanity, and more importantly Broward County families in need of homes.”
This year, participants will have the option of riding along a scenic 25-mile bike route or a new 50-mile route. “Families and cycling enthusiasts of all ages and experience levels are able to participate in the ride,” Jackson said. “With different route lengths, and the ability to ride at your own pace, participants can choose to challenge themselves or just have a fun leisure ride with their family and friends.”
The ride begins at 8:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Fort Lauderdale, 401 SE 15th Ave., and will continue along Las Olas Boulevard and A1A North to Hillsboro Inlet. The 25-milers will turn around at the inlet, while the 50-milers will turn around at Spanish River Park in Boca Raton. Bikers on both routes will then ride back along A1A South to Las Olas Boulevard and complete their ride at the church. Following the ride, there will be a brunch at the church from 9:30 a.m. to 12 p.m.
For those who aren’t yet comfortable doing long bike rides, Downtown Bicycles will be offering training rides on January 21 and 28 and February 4 at 8:00 a.m. The training rides will depart from their store located at 2571 E. Sunrise Blvd.
Early bird registration (runs through January 20, 2017) is $25 for individuals doing the 25-mile ride and $35 for individuals doing the 50-miler. For those registering after January 20, 2017, the cost is $35 for individuals doing the 25-mile ride and $45 for individuals doing the 50-miler. Please note that in addition to the registration fee, a minimum donation of $100 per person or $500 per corporate team is required to participate. To register, visit http://bit.ly/2k7aJet and complete the online registration form.
The church will need to raise approximately $70,000 to begin construction on the home in Broward County. Once the funds are raised, Habitat for Humanity of Broward County, with the help of volunteers, will conduct a family selection process where they determine, based on income and the ability to maintain a mortgage, the family who will receive the new home.
Additional sponsors of the 5th Annual Habitat for Humanity Bike to Build ride are Straticon, Burdette Beckmann Inc., and Downtown Bicycles.
